The Year Harry Went Emo
We can all dig Wizard Rock, right? Who doesn’t love people forming up rock bands– many of them with actual song-writing and instrument-playing skills!– and then singing about the various characters and plots of the Harry Potter universe? I got started with Harry and the Potters. Frankly, aside from “Save Ginny Weasley” and a couple other songs, they suck. So I bought both albums by Draco and the Malfoys. Great stuff. I’m particularly fond of “Voldemort is Awesome.” Then I found Gred and Forge, whose “Half the Band I Used to Be” CD is great top to bottom. That and a couple Jingle Spells Christmas albums and I have been very happy.
So when I saw there was a new charity album, Siriusly Smiling, out and it was by a whole big bunch of different bands, I leapt at it. I saw it linked by an acquaintance with the title, “Motherfucker, I’m So Angry That I’m Dead.” And I thought she was being silly, because wrock is usually pretty chill and kid-oriented.
Not this album! “Motherfucker, I’m so angry that I’m dead!” is the first line of the second verse of “Give It Up” by Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls. It’s sung from Cedric Diggory’s perspective and we learn that he’s angry to be dead because he was having a good week in general and, in particular, about to finally score with Cho Chang.
Other Wow Adult Content songs inlcude:
- “Creepy Mustache” by Remus and the Lupins: Our uncomfortable feelings about David Thewlis’s pornstache now in rap form
- “Brotherly Love” by Gred and Forge: Weasleycest. OMG.
- “An Entering Hogwarts First Year Expresses His Concerns” by The Mudbloods: Who teaches sex ed at Hogwarts? I almost had to pull over and die when I first heard them say “centaur-style.”
- “Every Time….” by Catchlove: Somebody thinks Molly Weasley is HOTTT.
And those are just the most explicit.
I keep listening to it over and over going, “This is so awesome! I can’t believe they put this out there! This is so awesome! I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY PUT THIS OUT THERE.”
Now I have to really up my investment in wrock. Gred and Forge has a new album coming out in a month! And I’m going to have to explore much more by Tonks and the Aurors. Anybody want to go with me to Wrockstock ‘09?
I wonder if there are other musical genres dedicated solely to a fictional universe. I would imagine that LOTR and the Narnia series would easily stir up some (in my opinion far more deserving) musical inspirations but I’ve never heard of any. And that’s to say nothing of science fiction. I now know what I’ll be wasting my time doing today.

Who WOULD teach sex ed at Hogwarts? Is it…
Flitwick, with his swish and flick?
Hooch, who knows better than most how to mount a broom?
Hagrid, who knows better than most “centaur style”.
Dumbledore, he has a purple hat, enough said.
Sprout, who does things with roots.
Snape, so cool he does not need a reason.
Or write in your own choice.
By the way, happy square root day. 3-3-09

Far more deserving? Don’t make me come over there and do dramatic readings. I will!

Oh, see, I’ve actually given this some thought. Isn’t that awful? It’s funnier the way you look at it. Also, “purple hat” makes me want to blush my way into another dimension. OMG.
Madame Pompfrey gives them the talk. Failing that, Heads of House, but they’ve got to mix groups to keep things gender separate. So Gryffindor and Ravenclaw girls = McGonagall; Gryffindor and Ravenclaw boys = Flitwick; Hufflepuff and Slytherin girls = Sprout; Hufflepuff and Slytherin boys = Snape. And then I’d think that, above and beyond the mechanics and maintenance portions, they’re just supposed to go to their Head of House for questions and concerns, regardless of gender.

LOTR > Harry Potter. No debate allowed.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but I can’t resist: Fuck you very much, too! :D
