A phlebotomy technician may not seem like a glamorous career, but it’s one of the most stable industries in the world. Every year there are more tests that require blood to be drawn, more people in need of medical care, and more work for people who are willing to take the time to get certified. High demand means better salaries than careers with similar training requirements and better employment prospects once out of school. Overall the career is good for someone who wants a laid back job where they are able to make a difference and put the training that they have received to good use.

The biggest issue that people run into when training for career is a fear of blood or needles, both of which are required for the job. If you think that you would be unable to deal with either of these things you should still talk with someone about this career. Many people start out feeling that they will be unable to deal with their fear, but find that after a few weeks they stop worrying and are able to see needles and blood as part of their job rather than something to fear. Generally the exposure over time to both of these components makes it hard to be afraid.

Most phlebotomy technicians complete their schooling very quickly and are able to start working right away. While there is high demand, it isn’t a job where there is a high demand for overtime or where it will take over your life. This means it works well for people with families at home, who don’t want a busy schedule, or who just want to have steady hours. Most people will find themselves working in a lab or some other clinical setting, rather than in a hospital.
